Do you think Transfer transactions should have Categories?

Post by Campbell »

Microsoft Money doesn't allow you to specify a category on transfers, it hides the dropdown and auto assigns a special category of Transfer:Account Name. I have to say, almost all the time I don't think categories are relevant on transfers, but there are a few small cases where I think it can be important.

How do you think More Money should work?

I never used Categories in Transfers. So I do not need them.
I transfers will only show specific transfer categories I would agree to have them.

About categories I would like to comment on this:
When you add a deposit you first get all the expense categories proposed. You should only get expense categories.
At the moment I did not enter much categories but if all my actual categories are entered it will be a difficult search
In act the expense or Income should never be shown except in reports (look at Microsoft Money)

I have a category Food with subcategories Dining out and groceries.
In Microsoft I start by searching F and all categories starting with F will show.
Also: Sometimes I receive money for an expense category. Like when I get a return on food I bought. Will that create an income category Food??????

I have this thought about categories in transactions:

I use an example: I have booked something in one account and it has a category there .
I transfer the amount to another account.
If I use the same category the amount will be included twice in the category report.
Without a category it will not be listed but what if I forget to enter category somewhere?
I will not see that I forgot because it will not be listed and I will not discover my mistake.

About this I have another thing to ask:
If an expense or income already had a category attributed this will only show when you enter the amount. Could it not be shown when you enter the expense or income

Ah yes. Ok, I will sort like so in the next version.

I've made that customisable. But I think it's useful. For example, you may have Income > Interest and Expense > Interest, or other similar categories that you want labelled the same but have distinct values for income and expense.
Also: Sometimes I receive money for an expense category. Like when I get a return on food I bought. Will that create an income category Food??????
No, you can assign inflows to expense and vice versa. The reports will then just show you the net value.
If I use the same category the amount will be included twice in the category report.
Hmm. That's a good point. The category amount will always net off, so reports including both accounts will show a net value of zero on the category. But if you had a report only including one side of the account, then you would see the value against the category.
If an expense or income already had a category attributed this will only show when you enter the amount. Could it not be shown when you enter the expense or income
You mean, to change the dropdown based upon whether you select the Income or Expense icon? If so, yes, I will make it do this.

No what I mean is this (example)
I have a company that comes to work on my pool in France called Mercipiscine.
The category is House France: Pool maintenance.
Once this has been entered Microsoft Money will immediately show the category and subcategory when you enter Mercipiscine.
In More Money the category remains blanc but appears when you enter the amount.
I would prefer to have it shown immediately.

Note: sometimes the category for an entry may be different. Microsoft Money always shows the last used.
I've made that customisable.
Could you tell me how to customize ?
But I think it's useful. For example, you may have Income > Interest and Expense > Interest, or other similar categories that you want labelled the same but have distinct values for income and expense.
Yes. Then the same category will exist in expense and in income. If you are booking an interest you get payed it will come in Income interest.
