Entering bills

Post by Russ-G »

Would it be possible to make bill entering similar to Money? Whereas:
  • you can manually enter the bill rather than it automatically entering
  • you can mark the bill to end at some point in time and set either the number of transactions remaining or the date this bill will end
  • also be able to set the bill as either a fixed amount or an estimated amount

You can already manually enter the transaction, by selecting the transaction in the Scheduled Transactions list, and selecting Record Transaction.

Adding an end date / entry count is a good idea, I will add that to my list.

How does the estimated amount feature work, it's not one I've used before?

I can answer your question as I use it also. In Microsoft Money when you set up a recurring transaction you can opt for fixed amount but also there is an option : the amount varies. If you opt for that you have to enter estimated amount.
Example : You set up a recurring insurance payment. You opt for amount varies and you enter the total of the bill in estimated amount. Next payment that amount will be proposed. With an insurance it will probably be higher. That is no problem you change the amount in your payment. Money then asks you if you want to change the amount.

But regardless whether it's a fixed amount or estimated, won't the scheduled transaction still be entered with the same amount? Is this more to do with whether or not it asks if you want to update the scheduled amount when you modify the amount in your register?

Yes I see what you mean. When you pay a recurring bill in Microsoft Money you just see the amount and not if it is fixed or not. You only see the difference when you look at the Bills and Deposits. But the difference is when you change the amount. If the amount is fixed you get the question if you want to change the amount and you do not get the question if the amount was not fixed.
I know of all my scheduled payments if they are fixed or not so for me it is not really necessary.
In fact some amounts of old not fixed scheduled payments now are much too low because they never change.
But let's hear what Russ-G has to say about it.
