Loan Payments/Scheduled Transactions

Post by navyblues »

Just recently converted from MS Money. I have a car loan on which I make monthly payments. My recurring transaction in MS Money figured the principal/interest split for me. If Maxim Money can't, I can work around it.

The converted transaction has the payee (my bank), and then a split transaction, where the principal is a portion transferred to the loan account, and the interest is recorded to the interest category.

I originally couldn't figure out how to create this myself (but I think I figured it out) and copied and pasted last month's "group", which worked, but the payee on the "parent" transaction didn't transfer. Every time I try to set my bank as the payee, it is there momentarily and then blanked out. Instead, I see "[Multiple Payees/Accounts]".

I also cannot figure out how to set up a scheduled transaction with this split. This is the only scheduled transaction that didn't convert from MSM, and I suspect it's because it's the loan and they computed the principal/interest.

Am I missing how to set this up as a scheduled transaction, or is it just not possible? As I said, if the principal/interest can't be computed, that's fine, I can change them manually, but while I have scheduled transactions with split groups, I can't figure out how to create one.

You should be able to select an existing group, and create a scheduled transaction from it. The schedule will be created as a group transaction (you can verify this as it will display in the scheduled transactions list with the group colour). However, you can't yet modify the group in the schedules list. If you need to modify a scheduled group, the easiest thing to do is delete it and re-create from an existing group.

Loans still need a bit of work, in terms of calculating the amortisation. I will try to get around to this soon. But in the meantime, you should be able to set up a scheduled group transaction and just tweak the amounts.

Totally understand about the loans and amortization. Like I said, I can work around that.

I don't see a way to create a scheduled transaction from an existing entry/group in an account. I can right-click the group "header" (which, again, won't change from [Multiple Payees/Accounts], but the converted trans it was copied from has the payee) and "Go to Scheduled Transaction," but that just opens the Scheduled Transactions screen. There isn't an option to Create Scheduled Transaction on the header. I can right-click an individual group member, and then I see an option to Create Scheduled Transaction, but it only creates that portion of the transaction, not the whole group.

What am I missing?

If you're seeing "Go to Scheduled Transaction", it means the transaction in the register was already created from a scheduled transaction. When it opens the scheduled transactions screen, it should be selecting that transaction. If you delete it, and go back to the transaction in the register, it should display "Create Scheduled Transaction" instead.

Appreciate your quick responses.

But there's not a scheduled transaction for this. It's the one thing that didn't convert from MSMoney. I have 41 Scheduled Transactions in Maxim Money. I have 42 in MS Money. This car loan is the only actual loan (i.e with amortization) I have. Well, I have my mortgage, but I never set it up "properly" in MS Money.

This is the converted transaction I copied:

There is no scheduled transaction that matches either the converted transaction nor the copied transaction. Nothing with the name PNC Bank nor [Multiple Payees/Accounts].

Looking at another Scheduled Transaction that converted from MS Money and is split, if I right-click and choose Go to Scheduled Transaction, the Scheduled Transactions screen opens and that particular one is highlighted. When I do it for this "rogue" transaction, the Scheduled Transactions screen opens, but nothing is highlighted. If I choose a different, non-split recurring transaction in an account, right-click and choose Go to Scheduled Transaction, the Scheduled Transactions screen opens and that particular one is highlighted.

Maybe something went awry with the conversion?

It does sound like there was a slight issue with the import, in that it created the transaction as a result of the schedule, but it didn't create the schedule for some reason. There must have been something about that schedule that was different, and perhaps I excluded it when I shouldn't have done.

I think the best thing would be to just delete the group transaction in your register, then create a new group in the same format as the old one, and then create the schedule from that.

I had some really weird things happen while trying to do this that I hope don't happen again, but I was *finally* able to manually create the split transaction AND create a scheduled transaction from that. Phew! Thank you for your patience. Have a good rest of your weekend.

That's great to hear.

In the meantime I'll play around with groups and see if I can reproduce any weird things.

As an FYI, the weird issues happened with "Unassigned" amounts randomly appearing. First, when I deleted my original transaction, an extra $50 was deleted with it. Not sure why. But then I noticed an Unassigned row for a week later (10/14) and I have no idea how it got there. Deleted that and I was back in business.

Then, AFTER I posted that I was able to create the scheduled transaction, another Unassigned row showed up for the exact amount of the scheduled transaction I just set up. Again, I have no idea how it got there, but I deleted it. And then saved my file.
