[Categories] Pre-populate them
[Categories] Pre-populate them
Hello,
For many new users, it would be interesting to have different categories and sub-categories predefined. Because for now, we have to enter them manually, and with a fresh start, it's kind of a hassle to do it. For new incomers that are not familiar with them, they won't be able to figure out which categories are necessary and revelant.
For example, mine is basically the one copied with the Money app enhanced with some of my own sub-categories.
I can provide the categories/subcategories in French & English (this latter would be a translation as I do not have the original Money app). If interested, just poke me and tell me which format is expected for thos categories/subcategories.
Cheers,
Kohe

Re: [Categories] Pre-populate them
Thanks, this is a good idea. I guess I was assuming most people would just upgrade from MS Money, and it would then import the categories they had, but that very well may not be the case.

Agree.
And : I only see possibility to enter category not subcategory

And: at the moment I only see categories. I would like subcategories for every category

Re: [Categories] Pre-populate them
My plan is to allow unlimited nesting of categories, rather than the fixed 2 from MS Money. So any category you will be able to select a parent, then it will display them in tree format. But I need to do a bit of work around splitting the colon-separated imported categories into the tree structure. And also work out how this will be displayed in charts etc.
Re: [Categories] Pre-populate them
I already got a problem here too.
I am at the moment entering my accounts as they are in Money.
In Money I had category Investment income with subcategories Interest, St Gillis ......
I entered a first transaction and having only 1 possibility for category I entered : Investment income Interest.
I now discovered categories in Static data.
I created a categorie St.Gillis and wanted to enter Investment Income in Parent category
I always got Investment Income Interest proposed and cannot erase the Interest at the end.
In the first transaction I entered I now see St.Gillis where I had entered Investment income interest.
I really have problems changing things!!!!!!!!
Also - how do I add categories???

Re: [Categories] Pre-populate them
At the moment, just create categories with both parent and sub-category, e.g.
Investment Income : St Gillis
Investment Income : Interest
(assuming that's what you meant)
I'll split these out into Parent/Child categories later when I implement the nested categories.
You can create categories either within the Transaction Detail just by typing a new value into the Category field, or you can right-click in Static Data > Categories and select Add Category.

Ok, I think I see what you mean. I'll get this fixed.I always got Investment Income Interest proposed and cannot erase the Interest at the end.

If I understand you well I can enter:At the moment, just create categories with both parent and sub-category, e.g.
Investment Income : St Gillis
Investment Income : Interest
(assuming that's what you meant)
I'll split these out into Parent/Child categories later when I implement the nested categories.
Name1 : Name2
Where Name1 is the parent and Name2 is the subcategory
Separated by spacedotspace.
But how will you split this out when it is on my pc???
I would prefer to wait till you were able to fix current issues.
Note: I never missed more sub categories - do you think that is useful????
BTW : I succeeded in installing Moneyplus on my test laptop. Found the link in the thread where I also found your post.
And - this is probably a stupid question - why is it not possible to import excell or cvs files???
I am now trying out an excell add-on that converts cvs to qif but am having problems

Re: [Categories] Pre-populate them
I’ll add an import for Excel and CSV later, but that will take more work as I’ll need to add an explicit column mapper editor. But it’s definitely on my todo list.
