Does Moneyspire embed the attachments within the data file, or are they just links to external files? I was wondering about this, as if they're not embedded the attachments won't be transferred if you move the MMY file to a different machine. But if they are embedded, the data file could get huge, and it would make saving a much slower process.
Yes, I am assuming that Moneyspire embeds the attachments in the data file! My Moneyspire program takes more than 20 seconds to close down! Nothing happens in that 20+ seconds the screen seems to freeze until the file is saved! No indication that the file is being saved, no spinning hourglass, NOTHING! Until it decides to close down!
A link to the file sounds like a great solution (until the file is moved!)
Hope this info helps! I am pleased that other Maxim users are acknowledging the usefulness of file attachments!
Regarding embedded vs links for the attachments, I prefer links. Primarily because of the loading/saving speed and file size issues. Links also support the possibility that you may want to reorganize location or backup methods later. One could also have the links point to a folder that is a subfolder of the data file(s) location so they could be moved together to a new machine or have another field in Settings similar to the one for backup location that could be changed for a new machine. Using links also eliminates some possible export and vendor lock-in issues.
Yes, I think links is the best way, but to perhaps have an archive option, so that if you move the MMY file to a different machine you can take all the attachments with you. I’m sure most people would organise files in one place, but they could be distributed all over your file system.

I agree, links is the way to go! With Moneyspire the attachments were embedded and gradually the system became unusable in that it took too long for the file to open!
However, it is important to keep all attachments in one file that can be backed up/archived easily.
I tend to use my "Receipts & Invoices" file to store my attachments, now goes back to 2011!
This came in useful recently when I had to return stuff to B & Q! I did not have the original receipt but had a scanned receipt as an attachment in Maxim Money. Printed that out and B & Q accepted it and issued my refund!
