Importing from MS Money

Post by Neill »

Hi

Love the work first of all, very impressive

Have made a few attempts to export from MSM to MM, using export on MSM
To export my main current account from MSM I try the below:

Export > Loose QIF > Select file name/location > Regular type > Select my main current account > export finished

In MM I then import this file
When this is done i find it has created the main current account which seems to have the correct values and end balance etc
However it has also created below addtional accounts (all of which do exist in my MSM file):

Joint account
Credit card 1
Credit card 2

The values for these accounts are way out compared to MSM file
I also have in my MSM file the below additonal accounts which are not moved over/created:

Savings account
Credit card 3
Credit card 4
Work AMEX

when I have tried to export and import all of the other accounts one by one (inclusive of all the above mentioned ones) the balances are way out,

Is there a method to do this which I am not aware off?
I was expecting only the exported account to be included in the import? (ie. one to one export to import relationship)

Thanks, Neill

Hi Neill, it’s a good question.

The QIF files exported by MS Money mark transactions as payments, deposits or transfers. Whenever More Money imports a transfer, it creates both sides of the transaction; one in the account you are importing, and the other in the account it came from or to. So whilst the account you import should be correct, the other account(s) will only contain the transfer transactions to/from the main account.

If you are not interested in the auxiliary accounts you could simply delete them. This will convert all the transfer transactions in the main account to simple payments/deposits.

However, if you do want to track these accounts, you will need to export these separately in MS Money, and then import them into the auxiliary accounts in More Money. When you import into these accounts, the existing transactions should automatically match against the ones being imported, and this should correct the balance.

thanks that made sense and seems to work for me in limited testing done so far

Found one possible issue with import of an account into MM:

Here it seems there is effectivly no data in the export file (I had archived old data in my MS Money file up to a recent date, so there were no transacitons present in date range of the export file when doing the export of the account)
I guess could work around this by just creating a new account of same name, but not sure if you want to handle this situation?

content of the qif export was:

Aha somebody else who archived files in money :)
I archived my files every 3 years.
I think you can safely make a new account with the same name.

Thanks for this. It hadn't occurred to me anyone would import files with no transactions, but it makes sense if the data has been archived. I'll get this sorted for the next release.
